Producer Profile

The producer plays the part of bringing each element of the film together and hopefully creating a successful film. They help out in every part of the films creation, from the development right up to the post production and marketing. They are the bridge between each element of the film.  Some of the many things they do is networking, casting, finance, problem solving, overseeing, etc. Also some skills they need to have are communication, leadership, story telling, organisation, monitoring, decisiveness, knowledge of the film making process, budgeting, casting job roles and more.

38F74E08-16F8-49CA-B2F1-6A40BECF0060One producer that I am fascinated by is Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is best known for being a director but he is also a very talented producer. His producing career really kicked off in the 80s, producing films like E.T, The Goonies, Back to the future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Gremlins and other classics. He produced most of his films with the producing company he founded in 1981 called ‘Amblin Entertainment’. The company gained a lot of recognition, with the fact that Spielberg was already a popular film director, being a factor that helped the company greatly. In 2015 Amblin Entertainment became a part of the new Amblin Partners and they now focus on creating family based films.

In the ‘Spielberg lines up reality TV show’ article for the guardian (2006), Spielberg says “All through my career, I’ve done what I can to discover new talent and give them a start,”. I have realised that this quote is something to think about in correlation with being a producer. You need to be able to create an environment that can help creatives flourish. Qualities that can help you do that is being a motivator, a mentor, being selfless, taking control and thinking about the creative potential others have.

Overall I feel that I have some attributes of a producer like being a people person and having good communication skills, however areas I could improve on are self motivation and the finance side of the job. I’m a long way from having all the qualities of a Producer but role models like Spielberg could help me get there.

  1. Nicely written with some good points made. There is a good use of quotes, the post is properly referenced with a good list of bibliographic references at the end of the post. Your comment that the producer needs to create an environment in which creativity can flourish is key to the role and well observed. You could ensure that all the references in your list correspond to some aspect of the written text (at the moment I cant tell which source was used where) and for good measure you could have an off page link or two in the text. Otherwise, this is a good piece of blogging – well done.

  2. Very well written piece of work that is informative and interesting with the use of pictures to help visualise.
Perhaps in the future add some in text references so I can see which parts they link to in the text.
Other than that a great piece of blogging that is fun to read 🙂
