There are 6 main documentary types:
1. Expositional
– This is the factual background that supports each story. It is a great way of conveying information often using archive footage.
– It addresses the viewer directly with a perspective, sending a message to the audience.
2. Observational
– Often known as the fly on the wall, it observes situations, normally with a camera that has access to the subject for long periods of time.
3. Reflective
– This type acknowledges that they are making a documentary and looks into filmmaking. It gives the viewer more of an insight into the making of the documentary.
4. Participatory
– For this documentary style the film maker will get more involved in front of the camera. Usually through interviewing and investigating.
5. Performative
– Usually this mode includes the film maker over acting and emphasising their involvement with the subject.
– Its less authentic and more on the acting side.
6. Poetic
– This style focuses more on an atheistic and tone for the documentary. It is usually done with cinematic visuals and editing.
