Text and graphics

Saul bass- pioneered using title sequences and graphics.

Typography

  • Text isn’t just about communication, it’s also part of the visuals.
  • Text sets a mood/tone.
  • Old type fonts have a diagonal stress and serifs.
  • Fonts can turn into branding.
  • Son serif fonts are best for readability and small text.
  • Old type fonts connote gothic and son serif fonts connote futuristic.
  • Leading = line spacing, it gives a sense of airiness.
  • Slab serif have thick serifs, they are a statement font.
  • Decretive fonts can be harder to read, limit them to headlines. They can be used as a focal point.
  • Subset script font = curvy/curly. Looks like a wedding invitation font.
  • Modern= thin serifs and stress lines are vertical.
  • Capital letters are harder to read.
  • Kinetic typography is typography that moves.

Mise en scene and colour should also be considered as graphics.
