In my final year of university I chose to take the sound design unit. I had never done sound design before and knew virtually nothing about it. While doing the unit I have found it to be intriguing, fun and challenging. Looking back at my experience with the project I have a few takeaways on what I learnt and what I would do if I have the opportunity to do sound design again.
There are many things that I believe I did well in my project like syncing up the sounds to the video, the pre-production, creating emotion through sound, and recording the sounds and organising them in a structured way. However there are definitely some things I would do differently in the future. I would try and record in quieter spaces as the rooms I recorded in made the audio I took have a humming sound in the back, I removed this with noise reduction in post however, it would have saved me some time to originally record in a fully silent room. I believe Solent has some silent rooms however I could not access them because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I also would have added more 360 audio if I hadn’t struggled with it in post as it is a great way of making audio sound more realistic. Another area I struggled with was getting walking footage. I believe I did well with using different shoes and floor materials for each scene however, I found the walking the hardest to sync with the video. Next time I would take more time on the walking and get a wider range of footage for it, I would also slow down the video while creating the sound and make it faster in post to sync it up more accurately.
Overall I am happy with the way my project went considering the struggles I had with it. The area I found the hardest was editing the audio. I had a lot of problems with my laptop and audition however I am thankful in a way as I learnt a lot of new editing skills in audition because of it. In future sound design projects I need to take more time on the editing and make sure it sounds as realistic as possible.
