Audio’s relationship to moving image

Audio plays an important part in film and moving image. It can determine the mood and context of a shot/scene. The sounds and tone of the audio can make us feel a certain way about what we are seeing on the screen. We connote certain sounds, noises and music to specific feelings, and through audio the sound designer can tell you what you should be feeling about the scene. For example, we could have a scene where someone is looking at a photo of someone, crying. If the music was fast pasted, upbeat and jolly we would think that they have fond memories about the person in the photo and miss them. If the music was slow and sad we would assume that the person in the photo has passed away or no longer has a connection with the person. If the music was loud, sharp and angry we would think that the person in the image had done something wrong and upset the person crying and they want revenge. The shot would be exactly the same in each scenario but because of the music and sound design, the context and meaning has completely changed.

When creating my sound design project I need to think carefully about how my audio is affecting each shot and what relationship it has to the moving image. At the moment I am quite certain that I will choose “I wear a mask that always smiles” by Firman Fitrianto for my sound design piece. It is a film by a previous animation student at Solent university. When I first watched it I was imagining all the different sounds I could create and add to the film, I think it will be a fun yet challenging enough film to do. The tone of the film is quite deep and sorrowful but it will be interesting if through the audio I can change the feel of the film. When creating the audio I do not want to just stick to one idea and be narrow minded, I will try different variations of sounds and music, play around with them, and see what I think works best for the project. My aim is to show thought and creativity through the relationship of my audio and sound designing to the moving image.
