Today we were given the theme of our documentaries: fear and hope. When first hearing the theme I thought it was quite depressing, with the first word being “fear” your mind straight away takes you to negative topics. After a while I realised that it doesn’t have to be depressing, I could focus on the hope side if I wanted to. Either way, I wanted to make it interesting so that my audience and myself don’t feel depressed after listening to my documentary. The theme is very broad so I had a lot of ideas in my mind, the tough part was thinking of new ways and angles to do the topics I had in my head. I am still unsure on what topic would be best for my documentary so below is a pros and cons list I have made on potential topics to help me narrow my choices down.
Fear- Scientology
Pros-
- Interesting topic that I could get a lot of research for
- I have someone I could interview
- Links in to the fear part of the theme well
Cons-
- Has been done before by Louis Theroux
- Would be hard to find an angle on the topic that hasn’t been done before
- Is a daunting topic to take on
Fear- Does the film “This is the end” show a glimpse into our future/ afterlife
Pros-
- Original
- Could research into the apocalypse
- Intertextual
Cons-
- Hard to find someone to interview
- Could just sound like I’m analysing the film
- If you haven’t seen the film is could be confusing and boring
Hope- LGBTQ+ Community
Pros-
- I have people I could interview
- Could get lots of research
- Different angles I could take e.g. how societies views have changed over the years, Stonewall Inn, LGBTQ+ youth, equality etc.
Cons-
- Has been done before
Fear and hope- How music affects our youth
Pros-
- I have people I could interview
- Most people enjoying listening and speaking about music
- Could research articles and specific artists
- I could show both sides of fear and hope
Cons-
- Its a vague topic
- Someone has probably done it before
